Company history

Oxford Trading was established in 1938 by Rosaria Galea, by setting up a haberdashery shop in the center of the business community in Valletta. The business was taken over by her son Francesco in the year 1946, and shortly after diversifying into the trade of baby prams manufacturing and repairing of push chairs. At this time the trade name was changed to Oxford House. Francesco than developed his business further by introducing to the island for the first time the manufacturing of Tubular Steel Furniture. This required the expansion of the factory/premises at Mriehel Industrial Estate and this was in 1960.

Francesco proved his business accumine and forsight because at the time he had already acquired more land around the factory premises for further expansion and a small showroom was also constructed. By this time the four children of Francesco were gradually taking over the business and the eldest son John and his brother Mario with the assistance of their two sisters started also with the importation of small household appliances and white goods.

In the year 1979 Francesco passed away and the business was completely taken over by the four children, led by the eldest son John working as partners. In the year 1986, it was transferred into a limited liability company under the name of Oxford House Ltd.

The line of tubular furniture was expanded in 1990 adding to our manufacturing line, with the importation of knocked down office swivel chairs and parts thereof. In the following years we expanded this line further by importing readymade office chairs and office wooden furniture. Due to the vast expansion, we had to open a new floor in our showroom displaying all the manufactured /imported furniture.

In the year 1994 the company was awarded the sole representation for Malta for the renowned brand name Bosch Domestic Appliances. This new opportunity was very carefully handled by the directors to the extent that the need was felt to expand the retail outlet into a larger and more modern premises. In 1995 the old premises surrounding the factory were demolished and a new state of the art showroom spread over four floors covering an area of 1600 square meters was built.

In the meantime full ownership of the company was acquired by the two brothers John and Mario Galea with the assisted of the third generation being the children of John and Mario Galea.

To date the company has established household names synonymous with Domestic Appliances renowned for quality and efficiency. The company offers a full after sales services for all the appliances imported.

The continuous investment and commitment of the company in the office furniture sector has led to be very successful and Oxford House Ltd. is among the leading companies selling office furniture in Malta. All office furniture is being assembled by our professional technicians.

In the year 2002/2003, the company decided to expand in the home furniture sector and is currently investing the necessary resources and capacities to establish and integrate in the local market.

At present the company employs thirty six full time employees. The growth of the company foresees to increase its staff capacity in the near future.

Overview and Objectives

Oxford house is an import and distribution company, marketing leading brands in domestic appliances, office and home furniture. In our recent past we have developed from a manufacturing oriented company toward one which specializes in retail and distribution.

Due to our relentless marketing efforts we are currently on the forefront of the market in domestic appliances and office furniture. We are currently expanding and developing our placing in kitchens and home furnishings.

Our current efforts are being directed in selecting the right company to supplying home furniture targeting the middle end of the local market, this will complete our range of furniture products which we believe will enable us to achieve a share of the market in home furnishings as large as the one we currently have in office furniture. Over the past two years we have embarked on a refurbishment program which tripled our furniture display area . We have successfully started to penetrate the kitchens market starting from the top end and are now starting to do the same with bedrooms, living rooms and sofa’s.
